Course Brief Description

Course Objectives

Continuation of the course "Statistical Methods in Marine Ecology". The course is designed for graduate students and focuses on advanced analytical methods used in quantitative research of marine communities.

Course Structure

The course consists of a preliminary meeting and an intensive week at the IUI. 

The preliminary meeting (about 5 hours during the week prior to arrival in Eilat) will be held on ZOOM and will include lectures and computer exercises (the exact date will be determined later).

The intensive week in Eilat will include lectures, computer exercises and fieldwork. The days are typically long, often lasting until late. At the end of each topic, participants present the results of the exercises and sampling. The work during the course is in small groups and in pairs. 

 

Major topics covered in the course:

  • Measures of diversity & Rarefaction;

  • Constrained & unconstrained ordination;

  • Cluster analysis;

  • Model-based multivariate analysis (includes intro to GLM).

 

Pre-requisites

The course is an advanced course that requires a strong quantitative approach.

Participants are required for a broad background in ecology that includes at least one advanced course in ecology.

An advanced course in statistics is also required. Preference will be given to students who have taken the "Statistical Methods in Marine Ecology".

The course requires acquaintance with the R environment to be checked during the preliminary meeting (i.e., there will be no rehearsal of programming in R).

Grading

- Preparation exercise to be given during the preliminary meeting: 10%

- Participation: 10%

- Oral evaluation, which will be held on ZOOM about a week/two after the end of the course: 80%

 

Target audience

The course is limited to 18 M.Sc. and Ph.D. students.

English. Reports can be submitted in English or Hebrew.
