Abstract

Lake Kinneret is a warm, meso-eutrophic subtropical lake. The lake is monomictic and is thermally stratified nine months of the year, with mixing occurring during the winter season. In the work presented we use bacteria as a proxy for the ecosystem of the lake. By closely following populations of bacteria residing in Lake Kinneret we show that the ecological system of the lake is highly dynamic yet very stable, and that the lake is mostly uniform, but can form two distinct systems under certain flow conditions. Finally, we discuss the plan to deliver desalinated water into the lake and demonstrate possible effects this could have on the phytoplankton population of the lake.
